In order to gain U.S. citizenship, however, citizens of other countries must undergo naturalization, which is the legal process of gaining citizenship. By completing this process, immigrants have the opportunity to become citizens of the United States.
The first thing to do in order to gain citizenship is obtain a green card. Foreign citizens may apply for a green card through family, employment, or refugee status, among other special provisions. Individuals with green cards are considered to be lawful permanent residents, which means they are legally able to live in the United States. Additionally, immigration law sometimes allows immigrants to retrieve their spouses and family members from across the border to allow them to become legal residents, as well. After a green card is obtained, the path towards U.S. citizenship can continue.
Green card holders are eligible for U.S. citizenship once several requirements are met. Not only must male immigrants who are between the ages of 18-25 register in the Selective Service System, but all immigrants must pay the appropriate taxes on their income, as well. In addition, foreign residents must hold a green card for at least five years before they can apply for citizenship, but this time can be lowered to three years if the green card holder files as the spouse of a U.S. citizen. Once these requirements are met, U.S. citizenship can be obtained.
In order to become a United States citizen, foreign immigrants must complete the immigration law process of naturalization. Foreign citizens must first obtain a green card to become permanent residents of the U.S., and then they must meet additional requirements in order to become citizens.
